Student Spotlight: Bassant Nada
June 25, 2025

When Bassant Nada first arrived at Kean University, she was already on a remarkable journey—one fueled by a passion for education, global impact and community leadership.
Originally from Egypt, Bassant’s academic path began with a prestigious USAID-funded scholarship, designed to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Quality Education. This scholarship opened the door for her to begin her studies at Kean as an online accounting student while still living in Egypt. However, it was her experience studying at Kean USA in Fall 2022 that truly deepened her connection to the University.
“The in-person experience at Kean was lifechanging,” she shares. “The quality of education, the support from my professors and the diversity of the campus community made me feel right at home.”
Throughout that pivotal semester, Bassant seized every opportunity. She volunteered at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey through Kean’s Center for Leadership and Service, participated in campus events and visited the United Nations Headquarters on a trip organized by Kean’s Center for International Studies, fulfilling a dream that had long inspired her educational pursuits.
Determined to continue her academic journey at Kean, Bassant faced financial hurdles but learning about the Graduate Assistantship program gave her the encouragement she needed to return for her master’s degree. After a year back home in Egypt, she returned to Kean as a Global MBA student and graduate assistant, gaining professional experience in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff.
“Kean has opened so many doors for me academically, professionally and personally,” she says. “The support from the Kean University Foundation, Career Services, the Wellness Center and the Center for International Studies made a world of difference. It’s like having a second family here.”
Bassant’s commitment to service and leadership is evident through her extensive involvement on campus. She is a member of the President’s Advisory Council, part of the Adaptive Growth Leadership Program, and a regular volunteer at the Cougar Pantry. She also collaborates with the Center for International Studies on events and is preparing to launch a new student organization focused on supporting international students.
Academically, Bassant interned with Tobin Porterfield, Ph.D., associate dean of the College of Business and Public Management, and worked on a research project examining how New Jersey employers perform on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives—a hands-on opportunity that combined her interests in business and sustainability.
One of Bassant’s favorite Kean memories has been the trip to the United Nations Headquarters, where she experienced firsthand the global initiatives she is passionate about. She credits several people for shaping her journey, including Susannah Porterfield, Ed.D., who encouraged her return for graduate studies; Adjunct Professor Eduardo Espinal, who offered invaluable career guidance; Adjunct Professor Joseph Patanella, who helped her find her voice as an international student; and Professor Veysel Yucetepe, Ph.D., who motivated her to pursue additional global learning opportunities.
“Each of these professors went above and beyond,” she reflects. “They didn’t just teach; they empowered me to grow and believe in myself.” As Bassant continues her studies, she remains committed to paying it forward. Inspired by the opportunities and support she received, she is passionate about mentoring and uplifting future international students at Kean.
“I am deeply grateful to the Kean University Foundation and everyone who has supported me,” Bassant says. “Education changed my life and I am determined to help others find their path, just as I did.
