Kean University Travelearn: South Africa

June 25, 2025

Kean University students and administrators explored South Africa’s rich culture, stunning landscapes and complex history during a University Travelearn program in March with Kean Senior Human Rights Fellow Ndaba Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela. The group, which included Kean President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D., and Kean University Foundation President and CEO William Miller, participated in a powerful 10-day journey tracing Nelson Mandela’s legacy – from Cape Town to Robben Island, where he spent 18 years in prison, to Soweto, Stellenbosch and Johannesburg. For many students, the trip marked their first time abroad. It was a deeply personal and educational experience that blended history, culture and reflection.

Trip highlights included visiting Table Mountain, sampling traditional South African cuisine, visiting local communities and experiencing a wildlife safari. At its core, however, the journey was about engaging directly with the country’s history of apartheid and its ongoing efforts toward equity.

“It’s one thing to learn about Africa, and learn about apartheid, but it’s another when you go onto the ground and you actually see the effects of apartheid, and you hear the stories of the people that experienced apartheid and how it has affected their lives today,” Ndaba Mandela said.

The Travelearn challenged perspectives, sparked dialogue and reinforced the value of global education in preparing Kean students to lead with purpose and empathy.
