Kean University honors the legacy of Frances Marie Ehman Bellak ’52, a devoted educator whose passion for teaching left an indelible mark on countless students. A loyal supporter of her alma mater, Frances remained deeply connected to Kean throughout her life. As a dedicated member of the Medallion Society, she demonstrated her unwavering commitment to the university’s mission and the success of future students.

Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey by a single mother who worked two jobs, Frances dreamed of becoming a teacher. That dream became a reality in 1948 when she earned a full scholarship to Newark State Teachers College (now Kean University).

Her teaching career spanned many decades, beginning as a first-grade teacher and culminating in her role as a Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant, where she empowered students of all ages and abilities to succeed. She had a lasting impact on her students, to the extent that a group of her first-grade students from the class of 1961 stayed in touch with her until her recent passing and honored her memory with a floral arrangement at her funeral.

Beyond the classroom, Frances lived life with enthusiasm. She was an avid traveler, immersing herself in new places and cultures, and had a deep appreciation for music, theatre and the arts. She was also well-known for her love of English tea.

Frances was engaged in her local community as a volunteer at the Newark Museum and a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, the Red Hat Society and her church.

Frances left a lasting impression on everyone she met with her strong yet gentle spirit and her genuine love for all. Her legacy is a reminder of the power of education and the influence one person can have on their community. In her memory, we encourage everyone to take a moment to enjoy a cup of English tea and reflect on a life well lived.
