A Journey to Success
December 2023
“Believe in yourself” is one piece of wisdom shared by Leslie Harwood, a Managing Director of Newmark and a member of the Kean University Foundation Board of Directors, at the College of Business and Public Management Dean’s Forum held on November 30th.
Ms. Harwood shared her professional journey in real estate, both as a commercial agent and as a developer, with the audience of nearly 100 undergraduates. The students learned about the wide scope of career opportunities within the industry. They also received career advice applicable to any field, as Ms. Harwood shared important lessons she learned on her Journey to Success in Business. “If an opportunity sounds interesting – take a chance” and “Always do what you are afraid to do” were among tips she shared.
Another key to success offered was to become involved in philanthropic causes. Ms. Harwood’s volunteer leadership of nonprofit organizations has a positive impact on the organizations she serves, is personally rewarding for her and has a side benefit: her professional network has widened due to the connections made through her philanthropy.
Dr. Jin Wang, Dean of the College of Business and Public Management, and Bill Miller, Chief Executive Officer of the Kean University Foundation, each acknowledged Leslie’s service to Kean during their opening and closing remarks. Dean Wang noted that “In devoting her time, treasure and talents to Kean, Leslie is continuing a family legacy. Her late father, Lowell, her mother, Toby, and their family have been leaders and financial supporters for many years, assisting in the University’s growth.” “Leslie brings invaluable knowledge and experience to our Foundation Board,” stated Miller. “We are grateful that our business students have now benefited also.”
